BHOPAL: Amid tall claims by Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) of nullah cleaning drive , most of the nullahs are still packed with filth and silts. This is the condition when BMC undertakes a drive to clean the nullahs every summer. Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) had a bitter experience of flood like situation in many areas in the state capital a few years ago but it seems that the civic body hasn’t learnt any lesson from past. The nullahs which are big and overflow sewage every rainy season include Panchsheel Nullaha, Ekant Park nullaha, the nullah near sector- Cin Saket Nagar, Patara nullah, Awadhpuri nullah, nullahs near Bhopal talkies, Bharat talkies, Chandbad, at Nehru Nagar Square, Banganga, Pushpa Nagar, Teelajamalpura and Bairagarh.
Divisional commissioner Kalpana Shrivastava had instructed for nullah cleaning before onset of monsoon. BMC deputy commissioner Harish Gupta said, “BMC administration at its job. Nullah cleaning is a major challenge for BMC administration before onset of monsoon. The BMC in the past had always undertaken such arduous job and this year we will follow the same as well to maintain hygiene and cleanliness.” Corporator Guddu Chauhan alleged, “Nothing has been done at front of nullah cleaning. Mayor Alok Sharma is trying to avoid convening a meeting of Parishad to face questions and discuss issues. It is sheer apathy on the part of the decision makers in Bhopal that Monsoon has almost arrived and nullahs have not been cleaned.” MiC member Kewal Mishra said, “We are trying to do best for nullah cleaning. We are in regular in touch with officials on such critical issues as all corporators have to face it in public. If nullaha overflows, we have to be accountable for it. Officials have to look at all the affairs. But if they have not it seriously, we will get it done.”
