Bhopal: The rains have arrived and areas where nullahs have been prime concern are awaiting civic body’s intervention to assuage the problem. The nullah at Saifia College Road starts overflowing whenever there is heavy rain and the road here gets submerged in it.

There used to be shops built over the nullah which were the source of filth there. The shops were removed around two years back but the nullah is still that filthy as it used to be back then. The water inside it when mixes with waste starts emanating foul stench that the locals are cursed to bear.

A resident of the area Ravi Saini said the nullah remained filthy throughout the year and the waste started rotting during rains. The water which started flowing on the roads during rains added to the problem, he said.

“The water when overflows, submerges the road and it gets very difficult to cross it without getting wet. The area also turns into a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other waterborne diseases during rains,” said a resident Mohan Singh. “The problem here is because of improper drainage in the nullah as well as accumulation of waste in it. The waste chokes it and water starts overflowing. If cleaning is done on a regular basis then we can expect improvement,” he added.

Mayor Alok Sharma said the city had other nullahs as well that needed planned maintenance. “We are awaiting funds under AMRUT scheme of the Centre. We have chalked out the plans to sort out the problem and will start its implementation very soon. The cleaning of nullahs is ensured on regular basis and once it is maintained in a planned way no such issue will arise,” added Sharma.
