Bhopal: Students of government schools appearing in the Class 9 and 10 board exams will have to concentrate on five subjects in place of six to pass the exam from current academic year.

Madhya Pradesh Board of Secondary Education had decided to calculate marks of only five subjects of Class 10 in the result to improve results from current academic year. The education department sees the opportunity of reduced dropout rate in 10 board due to this. This will start from Class 9 from the current academic year. Chairman of MPBSE, SR Mohanty said the CM had declared to calculate marks of only top five subjects in the board exams. Students have to appear in all subjects, but if they fail in one subject or score less, result would not be affected.

He said this pattern would reduce the number of students getting supplementary in one subject to 1 lakh every year. Education commissioner Neeraj Dubey said the department had prepared the proposal and the government had approved to follow the ‘Top Five’ subjects mark from Class 9 and 10 board exams.

He added those weak in particular subjects like mathematics, English, social studies were seen struggling hard to pass in the exam in Class 9. Not only this, huge number of students were also quitting studies. MPBSE had to follow the plan proposed by the department. The Top Five system will give ample opportunity to those students who do not want to study mathematics, English language or any other subject, but want to complete their studies.

Earlier it was mandatory to pass in all six subjects in 9th class and in 10th board, which generated fear of exams in students. In normal case around 1 to 2 lakh students are dropping out in Class 10 from Class 9. Dubey said, “If the student wants to peruse studies in arts or commerce but don’t want to study maths, or don’t want to study English, he can now continue his studies leaving the subject and taking advantage of the Top Five system.”
