“Not proud to be Indian, we hang our head in shame,” read one of the posters raised high at the protest held by students against ever rising rape incidents in the country, here on Monday. Around 50 students from more than 20 degree colleges protested at Board Office Square to extend their solidarity to the victims of Kathua gang rape and other such sexual attacks.

One of the protestors, Rahul Sharma informed Free Press that most of the protesting students were volunteers in NSS and NCC Cadets. Ruing about apathy of the administration, Rahul said “We sought permission from district administration to hold the demonstration but it didn’t allow us. However, we held the protest because if we as volunteers can work to make common public aware of government schemes, we can also aware government of public woes in the same way.”

Meanwhile, the students created a WhatsApp group to gather nationwide solidarity in the fight for justice and efforts are on to make effective use of other social media platforms to raise their voice against sexual crimes against women. The students have also planned to hold another protest on April 18 and send letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi by post demanding punishment to the guilty and safety of women in the country.
