Bhopal: Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) has assured the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that not more than 100 cattle would be slayed per day in the slaughterhouse. Mayor Alok Sharma appearing before the NGT bench in city through video conferencing said that a new DPR will be prepared within three months and before the council’s next elections, the shifting of slaughterhouse to Adampur Chhawani area would be completed.

The assurance has allayed the apprehensions of the BMC members and people who feared export of meat from city in case of excess production. Members of BMC including mayor-in council member Krishna Mohan Soni, municipal commissioner Abhijeet Agrawal , additional commissioner MP Singh and engineer OP Bhardwaj were present at the hearing.

In its last hearing, the Tribunal had directed shifting of slaughterhouse outside the city limits. BJP and Congress were at logger heads over the shifting of slaughterhouse. Earlier, there was no restriction over the number of cattle to be slaughtered at proposed abattoir at Adampur Chhawani area.

However, this has led to apprehensions that since there was no cap on the killing of animal each day, the unconsumed meat in the city would be exported. BJP corporators are dead against export of meat from city and were demanding assurance on celling on the killing of cattle.

It was said that over 1200 animals would be slaughtered in a day, even when the city does not need over 100 to meet its meat consumption. BJP and Congress corporators, who locked horns over the issue, came to a settlement with saffron wing allowing shifting of the abattoir outside city limits, on condition that a cap on the killing of animals per day would be set.

City will not be allowed to turn into a meat market: Soni

The city will not be allowed to turn into a meat market, said Krishnamohan Soni as only 100 animals would be slaughtered in a day to meet the consumption requirement in the city. The NGT had no objection on the quantity of meat and number of animals to be slaughtered. We were told to shift slaughterhouse from Jahangirabad to any other place outside the city limits, said Soni. We have been provided land at Adampur Chawani area and the slaughterhouse will be shifted soon, he added.
