Bhopal: A team from National Human Rights Commission, which had reached here on Monday to probe the complaint by SIMI under-trials incarcerated in Central Jail, spent almost 10 hours on the jail premises here on Tuesday.
The team, headed by SSP Puppul Dutta Prasad, reached the jail at 9.30 am and was there till 7.30 pm. In this period, it met more than 50 persons, including the family members of the 21 SIMI under-trials, their lawyers and representatives of civic and human rights organisations including the PUCL.
The under-trials had complained to the NHRC that ever since the ‘jailbreak’ by some SIMI under-trials in October and their death in an alleged encounter on the outskirts of the city, they were being subjected to inhuman and barbaric treatments and torture by the jail administration.
Madhuri of PUCL, who met the team along with five others representing PUCVL and other human rights organisations, told Free Press that the team gave them a patient hearing. She said that they told the team that the statements of the under-trials should be recorded in-camera and their medical examination should be got done. The under-trials are apprehensive that if they the jail officials would know about their statements before the HRC panel, they would be subjected to further atrocities.
The team would visit the jail again on Wednesday to record the statements of the under-trials and also of jail officials.
Meanwhile, the under-trials have written a letter to the jail superintendent saying that they should be allowed to meet their family members on Eid.
