Bhopal: MP fifth state to introduce Rotavirus vaccination programme

BHOPAL: About 63 per cent children out of 20 per cent dropout children from vaccination don’t get vaccination due to lack of awareness and knowledge, which is 30 to 33 per cent due to resistance towards vaccination. This was informed in a press conference on Rotavirus vaccination organised at Hotel Lake View Ashok on Thursday.

Representatives of John Snow India, WHO, UNDP, UNICEF and health department were present at the press meet. Dr Santosh Shukla explained that Rotavirus vaccine was a painless, harmless and safest vaccine which helped in reducing 40 per cent diarrhea incidences, morbidity and mortality. MP was the fifth state to introduce this vaccine.

Michael Juma, UNICEF chief, MP said in the state 6,500 diarrhoea deaths were due to Rotavirus and over 5,000 could be prevented with 95 per cent immunisation coverage of this vaccine. He further said 40 per cent of severe diarrhoea cases required hospitalisation and as such, timely administration of Rotavirus vaccine had great potential to reduce diarrhoea infections.

Dr OP Tiwari, deputy director, immunisation said Phase IV of Mission Indradhanush would be launched on April 7 in 15 districts of the state, namely Barwani, Bhopal, Chhindwara, Dhar, Gwalior, Indore Jabalpur, Khargone, Morena, Panna, Sagar, Shivpuri, Singrauli, Ujjjain and Vidisha.

Dr KK Thassu, director, hospital administration, NHM,  Dr BP Subramaniya, regional team leader NPSP, WHO, Dr Akasjh Malik,  John Snow International, Dr Pankaj Somani, state programme manager UNDP, Dr Vandana Bhatia, health specialist UNICEF, MP and Anil Gulati, communication specialist UNICEF, MP were also present.
