BHOPAL: Undue pressure on children from parents, education institutes and society, including uncontrolled involvement in social media and love affair, are major causes of suicide among the youth of the state. This is a part of the report submitted by the committee tasked to find a solution to the social evil involving students. The report was tabled in the Vidhan Sabha on Friday.
Chairperson Archana Chitnis presented the report and detailed various reasons behind the rising incident of suicide. She also suggested ways to control the situation. The report was prepared after studying a large number of cases. The report cited, personal, family, educational, social, financial and official or policy-related reasons as the main causes of suicides. It is also found that students of government schools were more prone to committing suicide than their private school counterparts. Maximum number of suicides were reported among children hailing from middle class families in comparison to other classes. The incidence of suicide among rural children was much higher than their urban counterparts. While the number of suicide attempts was higher among the girls, boys had higher success rate.
Warning signs
General conversation- The depressed boy or girl uses phrases like, “I am a burden on family and on the world,” “I am alone and helpless,” “There seems no way left for me these days,” “I have no aim to live,” “Nobody likes me,” “I did nothing in life,” and things of this kind.
General behaviour- He or she isolates from family, friends and gradually, boys turn to alcohol and drugs, which increases with every passing day. They search methods of suicide and watch TV, become insomniacs among others.
