Bhopal: BJP was afraid of voting and feared that truth would come to fore, said Chief Minister Kamal Nath commenting on the developments that took place in the first session of the newly elected Madhya Pradesh Assembly. “It is just a beginning and many more revelations would come in coming days,” said Nath interacting with the media here on Thursday after the House was adjourned sine die a day ahead of schedule.

The Assembly witnessed din and was adjourned multiple times during the election of deputy speaker. Regretting the breaking of the old tradition of giving the post of deputy speaker to the opposition party, Nath, maintained that it was BJP which broke the practice first. Congress MLA Hina Kanwre was elected to the post amid protest by the opposition members.

Accusing the opposition party of engaging in horse trade, Nath alleged that his party MLAs were lured till 7.30 am on the day of assembly speaker election. And only when they failed in it they spoke to us, he claimed. Speaker’s election was not important but we had to prove our majority in the House, said Nath.

“BJP has termed our government to be lame and a minority government but we have proved in the House that we are running strong government with majority,” said the Chief Minister. “The opposition had promised to cooperate in running the House and support the public-friendly decisions but now it was not fulfilling its promise,” said Nath adding that opposition wanted to turn the temple of democracy into a political wrestling arena.

Refuting the BJP allegations, Nath claimed that elections of assembly speaker and deputy speaker were done following all rules and as per the constitution. “The behavior of the opposition in the session was like a black stain on the dignity of legislature. Threatening remarks were issued for the chair and woman fraternity was insulted when obstacles were put in the election of a female member of the House,” said Nath.
