BHOPAL: A major fire broke out at the Central Jail in Gandhi Nagar on Sunday evening. The fire broke out at the store room on the first floor, where prison department keeps stationary, when there was no one in the area. According to fire team of Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC), the fire broke out at around 4 pm. Consequently the whole hall got filled with smoke. When the fire team reached there they break open the windows pane to douse the flames.
Four fire fighters which were presses into the relief work took around two hours to douse flames. The prison department employees tried to douse the flames using fire extinguishers, initially, to no avail as reportedly the fire safety arrangements were found to be inadequate. However, no major loss was reported from the site but the stationary of prisoners, blankets and other daily use items were gutted in fire.
SHO Gandhi Nagar Jitendra Kumar said the fire brigade was informed by the jail employees after their attempts to douse the flames, failed. He said that an FIR has been registered with police and that a short circuit is the reason for the fire. The fire tenders from Gandhi Nagar, Fatehgarh and Chola fire stations were deployed in the area.
