Bhopal: Use of Oxytocin for longer period by parents can harm development of the children as it creates hormonal imbalance in them, claimed research scholar of Barkatullah University, Pratibha Thakur. Thakur, who has analysed the impact of Oxytocin hormone on neurotransmitters in the first generation, told Free Press that “We have found that accumulation of Oxytocin in parental generation is resulting in hormonal imbalance in children.”
She further explained that “The results also showed that it had serious effects on neurotransmitters. The effects on neurotransmitters, which are the complexes that transmit signals from mind to other body parts to act accordingly, further negatively impacts different parts of the mind.”
The increase in concentration of Oxytocin hormone creates hyper pro-lactomia disorder in both females and males which ultimately results in infertility, uneven menstruation cycle in females and reduced lactation required in breast feeding, the scholar claimed. HoD of Bio Science department and Thakur’s guide, Prof Vinoy Kumar Srivastava confirmed the results of the study.
A major part of the research was conducted in the lab of Prof Sunando Datta of IISER Bhopal which was facilitated by its director Prof Vinod Singh.
THE LOVE HORMONE
Oxytocin is commonly known as ‘Love Hormone.’ Apart from transmitting signals from mind to other parts of the body, Oxytocin plays an important role in social bonding and sexual reproduction in both sexes during childbirth and after it.
It also helps pregnant women during labor and stimulation as well as in breastfeeding. Oxytocin, which is easily available in market as oral drugs and injections with different names, is widely used by farmers, dairy owners and poultry managers to achieve higher yields. It is even injected to women who are forced into prostitution.
