Bhopal: The litterateurs and artistes in the city mourn the death of writer and critic Namvar Singh at Bharat Bhavan on Thursday. The 92-year-old Singh passed away on Tuesday night (February 19) at New Delhi. Singh was born Jiyanpur village in Varanasi received his doctorate degree from Banaras Hindu University where he also taught for some time. He served as a professor of Hindi literature in several other universities. He was the founder and first chairman of Jawaharlal Nehru University’s Centre for Indian Languages and continued to remain as a professor emeritus after his retirement in 1992.
He worked as the editor of a weekly news magazine Janyuga , and Alochana , a Hindi magazine for literary criticism. He has books like Kavita Ke Naye Pratiman, Chhayavaad, and Dusari Parampara Ki khoj. He was awarded with Kendra Sahitya Academy Award for his work Kavita Ke Naye Pratiman.
Author Kapil Tiwari, critic Vijay Bahadur Singh, poet Udyan Vapeyee, Kailash Madbaiya , Anil Kumar, Pukhraj Maru, Om Bharti, Lalit Surjan, Shailendra Shaily, Ashik Mihra, Anand Naryan Mishra, Devilal Patidar, Harchandan Singh Bhatti, Anil Sahi and other writers, poets and artistes paid tribute to the departed soul by observing two minute silence.
Bharat Bhawan administrative officer Prem Shankar Shukla said, “Namwar Singh’s relationship with Bharat Bhawan was like that of mother and son. He took part in many events like Alochana Trivarshiki Samvay and Agyeya Smiriti Vyakhanmala and an event based Kavi Bharti, Jaishankar Prasad, Raguveer Sahay and Phanishwar Nath Renu. “We won’t be able to forget his contribution to the Hindi Literary world. His death is irreparable loss for all of us,” he added.
