BHOPAL: State practising lawyers were on strike on Friday to protest a Law Commission recommendation to constitute a separate commission under a retired judge to try complaints against any lawyer. Right now, Bar Council hears such complaints, so it is general perception that lawyers go unpunished if any complaint is lodged against them.
In Bhopal, lawyers raised slogans against Law Commission on the court premises under leadership of District Bar Association president Rajesh Vyas and other bar executive members. Nearly 3,000 lawyers of district and sessions court, Bhopal were on strike over the said issue.
Lawyer Rahul Sharma said, “We are protesting the Law Commission recommendations. As per the recommendations, there will be separate body to dispose of cases against lawyers. At present, Bar Council looks after the matter so it is alleged that lawyers get benefit of doubt and escape unpunished.”
Advocate Memboob Ansari, secretary, State Bar Council, said, “The strike is against Law Commission, which has recommended constituting a separate commission to hear complaints against lawyers. It is not justified. We lawyers will be deprived of our rights. We are fighting for our rights and professional dignity.”
