Bhopal: The incident of fire in the Mansarowar complex and its control by the teams of fire department on Wednesday raises serious questions like whether similar fire tender will be able to reach into the congested lanes if a fire breaks out in the busiest markets spread from Budhwara to Somwara.

Encroachment illegally parked and tangled over hanging wires may prevent the fire tenders from even reaching the spot for handling the situation. Parking of vehicles is a major reason for the congestion in these markets. The failure of Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) to offer parking space to around 3000 shopkeepers of these markets on concessional rates has lead them to park their vehicles inside the markets.

Local traders say that if there is a scheme of parking on concessional rate it will remove forty per cent of encroachment from the area. Mayor Alok Sharma claimed, “I offered concessional parking to the traders and asked them to give us a list of traders so that provision for parking can be made.” “However, they haven’t responded to the offer,” he added.

Refuting Mayors’ claim Chowk Bajaar Vyapari Sangh associate Vinod Bansal said “We have already submitted the list of shopkeepers along with details of their vehicles to the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) but nothing has been done on this matter.” “We also pleaded with BMC to provide us with feeder facilities from the parking place , again to no avail.” he added.

Experts observe that although the shopkeepers were promised parking facility but nothing has come their way and their vehicles remain a cause of chaos in the area. A regular visitor of the market said “The callous and helpless attitude adopted by administration is not helping the situation and it will turn even a small incident of fire into a catastrophe for the people and traders who depend on these markets.”
