BHOPAL: The state higher education department has written to the collector and IG of Bhopal seeking legal action against the publisher of a MA Geography book describing Gond tribals as cow slaughterers and beef eaters.
Making a statement in the House on Thursday, minister for higher education Jaibhan Singh Pawaiya said the principal of Mahakaushal Arts and Commerce College, which had purchased the book at the local level, has been placed under suspension.
Pawaiya said colleges had been instructed to form committees for approving books before they were bought for the library of the institution. The committee should vet books carefully. “No book will be purchased till it has been read,” he said.
Pawaiya said show cause notices were being issued to the principals of all the colleges which had bought the book. He said the book was not approved by the syllabus committee of the state government and was not on the list of 12 books suggested for the students pursuing the course. He said during the UPA rule, many NCERT books with controversial contents were published.
