Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh which lost the coveted tag of being the “tiger state” of the country, is once again eyeing to regain its lost status. The department authorities are keeping their figure crossed as with the completion of All-India Tiger Estimation-2018, the interim report of census is slated to be released in February.

It will take another six months for the final result of estimation to be out. As per the sources in the department, data filing exercise is being carried out and by next month the interim census report would be out. States with high big cat populations are jostling for the title of the ‘tiger state.’

Madhya Pradesh which boasted of being country’s ‘tiger state’ for decades, had lost the coveted title to Karnataka after population of stripped cat dropped significantly. In 2014, there were merely 308 tigers in the state. Forest department, under guidance and supervision of National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), scientists from Wildlife Institute of India conducted assessment with Android phone-based application and desktop version of M-STrIPES (Monitoring System for Tigers-Intensive Protection and Ecological Status) for collecting, archiving and analyzing the data.

The phone application automatically records the track log of surveys and line transects, as well as authenticates the data on signs and animal sightings with geo-tagged photographs. All India Tiger Estimation is conducted every four years.  Three cycles of the estimation completed in 2006, 2010 and 2014.

These estimates showed estimates of 1, 411, 1, 706 and 2, 226 tigers respectively in the country.  The methodology has remained the same in the three cycles in terms of concept, but latest scientific developments in the field of animal abundance estimation have been incorporated and the best available science to evaluate tiger status has been used.
