Bhopal: For children, the pressure to shine in exams comes almost from all quarters. Students wait with bated breath for results; for many it could be a happy end to months of hard labour, but for some a time of despair. It is not surprising that reports of student suicide cases hit headlines with the announcement of results.

Recently, following the declaration of X and XII boards results of MPBSE, unable to bear the failure some students in despair took the extreme steps. Expressing concern over the incidents, city-based psychiatrists, counsellors and artistes advised the parents to make their children feel special and be sensitive towards them. Free Press also spoke to some students who failing to clear the exams encountered negative thoughts. However, with support of their friends and families they bounced back and came out of their deep pessimistic thinking. Excerpts:

Shrasti Shrawan, X Std student

In the results declared recently, I got supplementary in four subjects. It was my second attempt. In first attempt I couldn’t take exam because of my mother’s bad health. She was admitted to hospital.  I was very depressed seeing my exam performance. I was so disheartened that I told my elder sister to give me some injection or sleeping pills. But she made me understand that value of life and people around us.

“Your life is more important than exam. If you alive, you can take exam again,’ my sister counselled. My father also made me understand and took me to a restaurant to change my mood. Now, I am feeling good and decided to take exam one again. My parents and my family made me realised that my life is important for them not exam.  I am happy now.

Sindhu Dholpure, counsellor, dancer and actor

My performance in MA (psychology) was not good. I got only 47 %. I became depressed thinking that I would not be able to sit in any competitive exams with such low marks. At that time, my father motivated me a lot saying not to worry as it has nothing to do with marks.

Believe in you practical knowledge. I worked on my skills and proved this. Now, I have worked as counsellor in various well-known institutions in the city including MPBSE, MP Police, Central Jail and Women and children Development. Besides, I also kept other options in my life like dance and acting. And now I am actor and dancer both. I am perusing MA in Kathak. I think, it’s your hard work and dedication brings success not percentage.

Simaron Shrawan,Student

Two years back, I took class 10 exams but failed. I was so tensed to think how I will face my parents and society. What they will say?  But seeing me depressed, my father took me to a counsellor, who motivated me a lot and made me look to bright side. Thereafter I decided to take exam once again.

After one year gap I sat in exam and scored good marks. I still remember my counsellor sentence “Life is never ending.” Now, I am doing bachelor in fashion designing from NIFT. I got immense support of my parents specially my father Dilip Shrawan who works in Bhopal Municipal Corporation. In fact he suggested me to do course in fashion designing. I think if parents support their children like my parents did, for sure the rate of suicide will come down drastically.

Children are far more important than anything

Parents should encourage their children and make them realise that they are very special and valuable. In fact they should make then understand that children are far more important than anything. They should give moral support saying not to worry if result is not good or satisfactory and motivate them to try better next time. Parents should treat depressed children with a lot of sensitivity and positive attitude. And the best solution to avoid such situation is that parent should monitor their children throughout the year not before or after exams.
