BHOPAL: Former MLA Surendra Nath Singh seems to be on active mode as on Friday morning the BJP leader disrupted a drive being carried out by municipal body to remove illegal vendors in MP Nagar area.

On Tuesday, the Singh had locked headquarter of the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) accusing the civic body of overlooking the problems of residents.

Singh along with BJP leader Vikas Virani and others staged a sit in near Axis Bank at Zone 1 around 11:30 forcing the municipal team to defer their drive to another day.

The BMC team had gone to the area to remove encroachment from the area on Friday. A number of makeshift eateries, juice joints, and snacks corners have come up on the government land.

The vendors were asked to vacate the government land and on the failure of which they were to face penalty. However, Singh and others BJP leaders, taking up the cause of the vendors, argues that no shopkeepers would shift unless alternate arrangement were made for them.

Singh demanded rehabilitation of the vendors before their eviction from the area where they have been carrying out their business for years. Asking the municipal teams to go back, Singh refused to budge from the area unless the vendors were provided alternative space to carry out their business.

The former MLA said that he was fighting for the rights of the vendors as shifting them without provide an alternate space would hit their business adversely.

We have asked the authorities to ensure space for them so that they continue to earn their, said the BJP leader.

“I have been their representative and would take up their cause,” said the former MLA, adding that they would meet the higher officials and take up the issue before them.

Kamal Solani, additional commissioner in the BMC said the final decision on the issue would be taken up at higher level.

The municipal team was only asking the shopkeepers to shift elsewhere, the drive to remove from the area would be taken up some other day, he added.
