BHOPAL: As many as 500 residents of Shahzahanabad area will have to wait another day to get back to their houses as the first attempt to raze down the dilapidated overhead water tank failed on Wednesday.

The residents were asked to vacate their houses as the tank in their areas was to be bulldozed. The civic body has suspended power and water supply in the area till the process gets over.

Despite 200 dynamite blasts, the municipal team could not bring down the rickety tank and the process would again be carried out on Thursday. The teams failed to gauge the strength of the overhead tank leaving even Sharad Sarwate, an expert called from Indore surprised.

The residents in the area will have to wait for one more day to resume their daily routine as till the work gets completed, they are left with no option but to stay with their friends and relatives.

The dilapidated tank was a threat to the lives of people residing in the area and the authorities had decided to raze it down. The residents around the area were asked to shift elsewhere till the entire process was over.

The power and water supply in the area was severed on Wednesday morning, hours before the process of demolishing the tan was to begin. The process began around 10 am and continued till 4 pm, without any success.

The teams of Bhopal Municipal Corporation under the supervision of expert Sharad Sarwate had started drilling holes in the tank to flatten it.

Sarwate, while speaking to Free Press. said that the tank would have come down as required number of holes were drilled with dynamite pressed into it, however, a very small portion where dynamite was not punched, turned out to be the base over which tank stood. The process would again be taken up on Thursday, he added.

The residents, who braved the scorching heat remaining out of their houses, decried that they somehow managed for one day, but now with the process still incomplete, they will have to remain outside their houses for second consecutive day.

One of the women who lives in adjacent building complained that residents were not informed earlier and only an hour before the process was to begin that they were asked to vacate their houses.
