BHOPAL: Farmers in the state are committing suicide due to debts also, home minister Bhupendra Singh said while talking to media persons here on Tuesday. He said farmers took loan from moneylenders, who then pressured them to repay the money.
He said there were other reasons for farmers’ suicides as well. This is for the first time that the government has admitted that debts are also one of the reasons behind farmer suicides. However, minister for panchayats Gopal Bhargava did not agree with his colleague. He said no farmer had committed suicide in the state due to debts.
The government, in answers to questions related with the farmers’ suicides in Vidhan Sabha, has been quoting all sorts of reasons, barring debts. MLA Govind Singh said debts were the biggest reason behind farmer suicides. He said the reasons being dished out by the government for the suicides were false and baseless.
