Bhopal: Goverdhan project under which the municipal corporation had to clear the city of stray cattle and to ensure land to the dairy owners is running only on papers.

Notably, National Green Tribunal (NGT) had ordered to clear the city of stray cattle and shift the dairies running inside the city to specified places on the outskirts.

However, the order is only being partially implemented by BMC squad which is tasked to clear the city of stray cattle. There are as many as 750 dairies running in the city which are to be displaced in the project and will thus be relocated to seven different spots identified by the corporation.

However, the crackdown on these dairies seems to be on papers only as cattle owners running their dairies are hardly fined or their cattle seized during action by the municipal squad.

Locals say the team is ineffective as the dairy owners’ milk their cows and buffaloes in the morning even before the team reaches. The team sets off for the crackdown after 10 am and by then the animals are milked and left to graze, which minimises the possibility of seizing the cattle.

However, assistant commissioner in the corporation MP Singh said the team demolished the structures during action hence they couldn’t say if the dairy owners were again running their business.

When asked as to why the teams set out so late for action he said the action sometimes needed police force and other arrangements, hence it got delayed.

“Our teams keep visiting the places hence they can’t resume operations once the structures are razed,” said Singh.

NGT unhappy at BMC working

Hearing a petition filed by Susheel Sharma, the NGT bench under Justice Dileep Singh asked the corporation how much time it would take to complete the process of shifting. The corporation sought extra time to carry out the task over which the tribunal expressed displeasure. Meanwhile the dairy owners’ association said the corporation was demanding Rs 10 lakh from them in lieu of allocating them land at the marked places. Their counsellor said the amount was hefty and couldn’t be afforded by the dairy owners. Upon hearing this, the court warned the corporation to expedite the process or else allot land to dairies for free.
