Bhopal: Experts of state archaeological department claim that the controversial site cannot be a mosque or a temple, because it is a part of the Fatehgarh fort and it was a strategic point. Department’s technical advisor Ahamad Ali said the controversial site was a part of outer or the entry gate of Fatehgarh fort.

“It could not be a religious place for five basic reasons: staircase, watchtower, gate, minarets and shooting points situated on the top floor,” he informed.

“The gate was of strong wood embedded with sharp nails, so that the man, or the animal like horse or elephant cannot break it. It had a small entry gate situated at the lower portion, so that if any one forcibly tried to enter, he would be stabbed by the guards easily. Mosques have no such type of gate entry,” said Ahamad. Avery small and narrow staircase is constructed through which only one man could go or can come down. In a religious place where many people are gathering, the small and congested staircase cannot be feasible.

The towers situated at the building states that, they were built to observe intruders coming towards the fort. Their design is in such a pattern that the guard can monitor the visitor, but cannot be identified by the intruder. “At religious place these types of watchtowers are not constructed,” he added The minarets are very normal in size as they were built to add beauty to the building and not for putting lamps for the people to reach the religious site. The building had a parapet wall with full height so that the guard could aim and shoot the intruder, and he could save himself. “At a mosque or a temple, such types of strategic points are not constructed,” the expert claimed.

War memorial plaque

Ali added that at the gate of the building a war memorial plaque was present. From Bhopal estate 994 soldiers went to participate in the WW I fought between 1914 and 1919.

In the war 34 brave soldiers lost their lives, and to commensurate the memory of the war heroes, a war memorial plaque was established just at the entry of the gate. “The final confirmed reason that the building is not a religious place of any religion is that at no religious building a war memorial plaque is established,” Ali added.
