BHOPAL: Upholding its old tradition, the Congress Legislature Party (CLP), which met here on Monday to elect the new leader of opposition in the Madhya Pradesh Vidhan Sabha, passed a resolution authorising the AICC president to nominate its leader. All the Congress MLAs were present at the meeting.
The post has fallen vacant due to the untimely death of Satyadev Katare. For more than a year now, MLA Bala Bachchan has been holding the charge of LoP.
Soon after the meeting began in the presence of AICC observer Ajay Maken, state Congress president Arun Yadav and AICC general secretary in-charge for Madhya Pradesh Mohan Prakash; Yadav handed over a slip to Bala Bachchan.
Thereafter, Bachchan moved a one-line resolution authorising the AICC president to nominate the LoP. Mahendra Singh Kalukheda seconded the resolution, which was passed unanimously.
There was a slight murmur of protest from some leaders who said that if just a simple resolution was to be passed, where was the need for the elaborate meeting.
Arif Aqueel, however, was more forthright. “When this was to be done, where was the need for this elaborate exercise”, he asked Makan and Mohan Prakash and adding that “I know whose name you have brought”
Earlier, MLA Dr Govind Singh said that as the AICC observers were here, the LoP should be decided chosen either by voting or through consensus. But his tone was entirely different when he turned to the media after the meeting. “All MLAs have decided to authorise the AICC President for the appointment”, he said.
A visibly happy Bala Bachchan and Jitu Patwari welcomed the decision. MLA Ajay Singh’s supporters were present at the meeting venue in large numbers and were raising loud slogans hailing him. Five MLAs are said to be in the race of for becoming the LoP. They include Mukesh Nayak, Ramniwas Rawat, Bala Bachchan, Mahendra Singh Kalukheda and Ajay Singh alias Rahul Bhaiya.
