The sloganeering related to Chowkidars has generated reactions from both sides, much to the chagrin of the real Chowkidars. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, addressed over 25 lakh watchmen. Still chowkidaars and stakeholders in Bhopal gave a mixed response on the politics of their profession.
We spoke to security guards or the owners of security agencies about the ongoing on the on social media and other quarters. Excerpts:
Gendalal, lives in Shivaji homes and works as a security guard at an apartment. He said it is unfair to drag the whole community into politics. “My work is to ensure no one enters the building without my knowledge and that is what I am being paid for,” he said.
Adnan Ahmad, a security staff with the public health engineering department (PHED) said that whole community is being targeted because of a person. “It is unfair to say Chowkidaar chor hai as it hurts our sentiments. No one should use a profession’s tag for political benefits.”
Shivlal Arora, works as a watchman near 10-number market says that he is unaware of what is going on around the term- chowkidaar. He is unaware of the war of words going on between the two parties. “I work as per the rules and there has been no complaint against me. It hardly matters whether one says he is a chowkidaar or one says chowkidaar chor hai.”
“A watchman is supposed to ensure safety of his area and that is the job that we do with honesty,” said AK Ojha. He runs a security agency in Bhopal and maintains that the whole community should not be targeted and here we see the leaders are now generalising the word, that is unfair on their part and that they should avoid it.
