Bhopal: Collector Vinod Sharma has said that bio-diversity is about our entire ecological system which includes big and small trees and all organisms including the microbes and bacteria. Bio-diversity is the diversity among living being and including diversity between species and within them. He was addressing the divisional-level workshop organised here to mark the International Bio-diversity Day. On this occasion, CEO, district Panchayat Anurag Verma, Professor Dr R.K. Rao of Jiwaji University, DFO Dr A.K. Ansari and SDMs, tehsildars and officers of different departments were present.
The collector said that it is through bio-diversity that we humans meet our needs for cloth, good, fuel and medicines. It not only helps in maintaining ecological balance but also contributes to increasing food grain production. He said that we can save ourselves from global warming, floods, droughts and land erosion by protecting bio-diversity. Professor R.K. Rao of the Jiwaji University said that there are many different kinds of biological diversity including genetic diversity. He said for the proper functioning of the eco-system, it is essential to protect bio-diversity. He said that eco-system diversity is reflected in different geographical formations like lakes, volcanoes and deserts.
DFO Ansari said that gharials are only found in the Chambal River. On this occasion, a photo exhibition based on alligators, dolphins, Chambal ravine, allovera farming and a project for leveling of the ravines was also put up which was widely appreciated. The students took out a prabhat pheri to mark the day while an essay-writing competition for children in the 10-14 years age-group was also organised.
