BHOPAL: Festival season of lakhs of labourers in Madhya Pradesh who have worked under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act for days have gone sour as their payment has been not been released by union government. According to MNREGA website Rs 3133 crores is pending with the union government. To add to the woes of labourers Modi government did not process Fund Transfer Orders (FTOs) from October 2018 to February 1 due to nonavailability of funds for the scheme.

The Act promises that wages will be given within 7 to 15 days of work. The website mentions that labour wages for more than 3 crore days in MP haven’t been paid. High level sources have revealed that Modi government has asked the state governments to make MNREGA payment from their kitty. Most of the states have expressed unwillingness to do so. In Madhya Pradesh lakhs of labourers have been suffering due to nonpayment of wages.

Tribal people from Dhar, Barwani, Jhabua and Alirajpur are said to be worst sufferers because their main festival ‘Bhagoriya’ has started. Most of the labourers have depended on this payment but are now left in the lurch. On Tuesday, scores of tribal gheroed Barwani police station and demanded their wages from the government. ‘The police should either help us in getting our payment against the labour done or arrest us,’ said one of the protestors. But the police are doing neither. The protest was on till filing of the story. Barwani District administration has already said that they were unable to pay the amount, therefore the labourers decided to move to the police.
