BHOPAL: The jail administration partially accepted the demand of the under-trials and convicts lodged in the central jail, who went on hunger strike on Wednesday demanding that bidis and tobacco be provided to them as earlier.
The DG, Prisons Sanjay Choudhary informed Free Press that the prisoners and the under-trials were protesting the order under which extra clothes, sweets, sugar, chilli, biscuits, namkeen, costly cosmetics, perfume and others were banned.
The jail administration has now permitted them to keep more four pair of cloths including winter wear. The jail inmates also wanted better food. The administration has decided to increase the ingredients in food with immediate effect and have made the provision officially and it has also been decided to add salad to the food menu.
The other main demand of the under trials was to get bidi and tobacco but due to provisions in the jail manual, their demand was turned down.
The prisoners can purchase bidi and tobacco from the jail canteen which sells items like toothpaste, soap, oil, bidi and tobacco and others. The payment is adjusted against their wages.
