Bhopal: Most of young adults (15-25 years age-group) in the city seem to have no time for books.

Books prescribed in their curricula are the only ones they read. In their spare time, they prefer listening to music or reading motivational books, especially those which can help them build their careers. But here too, they prefer online editions. They have no interest in reading fiction, never bother more serious stuff.

Free Press spoke to some young adults to know which book(s) they have read last (except course books) over the past 3-4 years.

I don’t like to read novels and storybooks because I have no interest in literature. I mostly read science magazines and books related with competitive exams. I had read the autobiography of APJ Abdul Kalam ‘Agni Ki Udaan,’ (Wings of Fire) when I was in class 11. I have just cleared class 12 and now I will do my degree in engineering, before plunging into preparations for the Civil Services Examination. Joining the IAS is my dream and my objective and I will do things which will help me realise my dream.

Sanyam Jain, 18, science student

I mostly like to read articles on different topics online. Generally, I read suggested books i.e. those suggested either by my teachers or which are helpful for my career. When I was in the third year of engineering and was preparing for CAT, I used to read Agatha Christie and Dawn Miller because I was told it would help me crack the tough test. Otherwise, I have no interest in literature.

Aayush Nayak, 21, B Tech student

I used to read books when I was in class 9 and 10. I have read the autobiography of APJ Abdul Kalam ‘Wings of Fire’. I have not much interest in reading stories, poetry or novels. I have an interest in mythology of different religions whether it is Hinduism or Islam. I have read epics including the Ramayana and Mahabharata on Wikipedia, especially about their popular characters. I never even tried to read fiction. It may be due to lack of time as well as interest.

Akshat Raj Lad, 18, mathematics student

Mostly my reading is confined to course books. I read fiction once in a while because I don’t get time and also I do not have much interest in fiction books. The book I read last was ‘Oliver Twist’ by Charles Dickens in January this year.  I mostly read articles related to Indian history on the net. I love to play guitar and listen to music rather than reading books.

Sankalp Dixit, 15, student

I like to read motivational books. In the last two years, I have read four books of Stephen Toby. Basically, the books talk about how to achieve success. I don’t get much time to read books, except course books. I try to read at least one chapter (of a motivational book) before I go to sleep.

Gayatri Iyer, 18, BA management student

Normally, I don’t get time from course books to even look at other books. So, I am able to read other books only once in blue moon. I love mystery novels. I have read books of Harry Potter and Sherlock Holmes series. Generally I read such books during vacations.
