Bhopal: Twenty one cancer patients were shunted out to other hospitals empanelled in Gas Relief Department by Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Centre (BMHRC) administration on Wednesday amidst protest. BMHRC director Dr Prabha Desikan was not available for comments.
In fact, with resignation of Dr Vinay Kumar, onco surgeon and HoD of oncology department of BMHRC, cancer patients were told to go home by the hospital administration.
Dr Vinay Kumar has joined AIIMS. So oncology department in BMHRC is totally non-functional which was why all the 21 cancer patients were kicked out from hospital without any treatment. When protests turned intense, BMHRC administration had to shift the patients to other hospitals – Jawaharlal Nehru Cancer Hosptial, Navodya and Chirayu Hospital.
Bhopal Group for Information and Action’s Rachna Dingra said, “It is ill-treatment by BMHRC as cancer patients have been kicked out. We protested and ensured that they should be shifted to other empanelled hospitals. With resignation of Dr Vijay, oncology department has been closed in BMHRC.”
BMHRC PRO Mazhar Ullah said, “We have shifted all the cancer patients to three hospitals. It is wrong to say that we have sent cancer patients without treatment.”
