Bhopal: The heavy showers that battered state capital in last two days have exposed the civic authorities’ tall claims of efficient drainage system as waterlogging was visible on all main roads and streets of the city.

The dilapidated roads, water filled potholes and flooded streets are clear indicators of the lackadaisical attitude of the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) towards their preparedness for the monsoon. Local civic body officials had been claiming that the sewerage and the drainage system will tackle the rain water, but continuous rain in last few days have exposed their apathy as condition of city roads have worsened.

Water stagnation and potholes on the roads are making it tough for motorists to drive on these roads. Water logging in Saket Nagar area is causing a lot of inconvenience to people, besides the area is also under threat to waterborne disease following water stagnation. Large potholes have surfaced on the roads in last few days following heavy rain and they posing huge risk to the two wheelers commuters.

The area of Kolar is also facing apathy of the civic authorities. Heavy downpour in last few days has turned roads and vacant grounds into water bodies. One of the residents of Sarwadharm B sector said the water logging in the area is nothing new, but in last two days when the city witnessed heavy rains it has become very difficult to commute on the bumpy stretch. The roads have developed potholes and now there are threats of water borne diseases are also on the rise, she added.

Another resident of the colony Roop Singh said the water gets accumulated on the roads every time the rains arrive and the situation this year is no different. Waterlogged roads leave you drenched even if it is not raining, he said. Tara, who lives in Mahabali Nagar, said that the accumulated rain water creates a lot of trouble whenever we step out of our house. The situation gets worse when rains arrive with force as it happened in last few days, she added.

The Mandakini ground has turned into a lake in this season and is threat of water borne diseases in the area is looming large. The authorities should make sure to clean the area and pump out water said a local vendor operating near the ground. The dilapidated roads in the area are adding to the problem which is causing a serious traffic issues during rains.
