Licensed shop owners claim they too targeted

BHOPAL : Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Friday continued its drive against the ‘illegal’ meat shops operating in the city. On Friday, the BMC officials took actions against the meat shop owners operating without license in Kolar and Jawahar Chowk localities of city.

While taking against the illegal meat shop owners and violators of norms and regulations, BMC action team took action against 39 meat shops and collected a fine of total Rs 27,700 from the violators. It also seized about 35 kg meat and shop materials during the action.

Earlier, BMC had taken action against illegal meat shop owners operating in Gandhi Nagar, Karond and Bairagarh localities in the city. It has started this drive against illegal meat shops in the city after mayor Alok Sharma announced on April 17 that they have identified over 100 illegal meat shops operating in the city and soon action would be taken against them.

However, some of the meat shop owners against whom action was taken claimed they had the required license to operate in the city. Despite that action was taken against them.

“I am running my shop for last 10 years in Lalita Nagar of Kolar with proper license and other documents. When the BMC team came to my shop I told them that I had the license but it fell on deaf ears. They seized meat from my shop along with other things like weighing machine and meat cutting knife. They should have at least given us a warning so that the poor meat shop owners could have taken necessary steps,” said one owner Ismail Khan.

Additional commisioner, health department (BMC), MP Singh however denied that action was taken against meat shop owners having license.

“We took action against the violators of the norms. If one is having a license doesn’t mean he would flout the rules. Many meat shop owners who were having a valid license are displaying the slaughtered meat at their shops, which is not allowed. According to the norms, meat at the shops should always be covered. Apart, many were found violating the norms related to hygiene which is a serious matter and they too were penalised,” said Singh speaking to Free Press adding the drive would continue on Monday in other parts of the city.
