BHOPAL: Several colleges have charged late fee from the students despite clear instructions from the higher education minister not to do so. Officials of Barkatullah University commented that colleges are bound to refund the extra amount charged from the students.

Considering the problems faced by residents, in general, higher education minister Mohan Yadav had announced that late fee would not be charged for examinations from the students.

Barkatullah University had issued a notification in this regard mentioning that the examination fee is only Rs 1,200. Nevertheless, several colleges sent SMSes and WhatsApp messages to students mentioning an additional late fee of Rs 800, thereby forcing students to pay Rs 2,000.

The students were allowed to pay examination fees till a day before the exam. Students were sent messages reminding them of the late fee. One such student said that, struck by corona, he had deposited his fees at the last moment. However, he said that he was surprised to see that he was supposed to deposit Rs 2,000 instead of the exam of Rs 1,200.

The student said that he had, nevertheless, deposited the amount to avoid being debarred from the examination.

Registrar of Barkatullah University HS Tripathi said that strict action would be taken against the colleges which had charged extra amounts from the students in total contravention of the state governmentís orders. ìBesides action against the officials responsible for the lapse, the colleges will have to refund the extra amount charged from the students,î said Tripathi.
