Bhopal: Ab tak 38: 4 more farmers end lives

Sehore: Four more farmers allegedly committed suicide in State since Wednesday taking the total number of such farmer deaths to 38 since June 6. Two cases of suicide were reported from Sehore, the home district of Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, besides one each from Mandsaur and Hoshangabad districts, Two more farmers committed suicide in Sehore, the home district Chouhan over the past 24 hours, taking the number of farmer suicides in the district to nine.

On Thursday morning, a tribal farmer Mariya Barela, 52 ended life by hanging self from a tree at village Imlikheda of Icchawar Tehsil. He owed money to some individuals and was under intense pressure from them to repay the amount. The family members of Barela said that he took the extreme step as he was under distress due to a debt of Rs one lakh, taken from different banks, cooperative societies and private lenders. District administration officers said that a probe is on to determine the cause behind the extreme step.

On Wednesday morning, Jagdish Yadav of Gwaltoli locality of the town committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance. His son Narayan Yadav said that his father was disturbed due to repeated crop failure in the past couple of years. He was tilling three acres of land, however his crops were failing for the past two years. He leaves behind three daughters and two sons. Kotwali police station in-charge Ajay Nair said a case has been registered and inquiry is underway. In Mandsaur, the epicentre of farmers’ stir in the state, 65-year-old Bhagawan Meghwal hanged himself to death from the branch of a tree at his farm in Bardia Puna village on Wednesday, police said. In Sandia village of Hoshangabad district, 53-year-old farmer Gulab Singh committed suicide by hanging himself at his farm Thursday morning, Police said. The farmer has left a suicide note in which he said that he was taking extreme step on his own and nobody should be held responsible for this.

“We have registered a case and the exact reason behind his death would be known folowing investigations,” he said.
