BHOPAL: More than 2,900 women and girls were kidnapped from different parts of the state in the first four months of the year 2021, which is around 600 more cases if compared to the corresponding period last year.
Last year between January and April, nearly 2,300 women and girls were kidnapped whereas the figure during the same period this year stands at 2,957 ñ an increase of around 30 per cent cases. This April, when the ëJanta Curfewí was in force, the state witnessed 666 kidnapping cases.
Last year also the country was under total lockdown from March 22 to May 2020. However, despite the lockdown, kidnappings continued unabated. As many as 207 women and girls were kidnapped in April and 381 in May in the state.
In the year 2020, a total of 6,887 girls and women were kidnapped.†The year 2019 witnessed 9,812 abduction cases.
Just after the relaxations in national lockdown in June, the number of kidnappings shot up to 624 and the cases continued to swell in the coming months. Last year, about 73% kidnappings involved girls and the rest were women.

Police sources informed that whenever minor girls go missing, the parents file kidnapping complaints. In many cases where girls elope with their love interests, kidnapping cases are registered.
Even as the number of kidnappings remained less as compared with 2019, the numbers are worrisome.
Recently the Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had given instructions to the police department to trace the missing girls. The police department had launched a drive to locate the missing or kidnapped persons. Additional Chief Secretary, Home, Rajesh Rajora is monitoring the drive.
