Banks not providing new currency to us: PMG

BHOPAL: The banks are not providing new currency notes to the Post Office for the exchange of the demonetised currency. The Post Offices of the state have deposited and exchanged the demonetised currency worth more than Rs 425 crore in just four days.

The chief postmaster general ME Haq informed a press conference that in the state around 1000 post offices, including main and sub post offices situated in rural areas are exchanging and also depositing the demonetised currency.

More than Rs 372 crore has been deposited in the accounts of the people and around Rs 52 crore and 47 lakh has been exchanged. e added that the banks are not supporting the POs by providing the cash needed for the exchange. They has contacted the officials of RBI and raised their issue.

The officials instructed the banks to provide required amount of cash for the exchange, the POs are having 2.29 crore accounts. He claimed that the offices are not having the shortage of space, but they are short in cash.

He also added that the waste and e-waste which was kept in their offices have been sold out, in two years from October 2014 to October 2016 they have sold the items worth Rs 92,62,734. Whereas they have only 18 ATM functional out of 52 ATMs.
