BHOPAL : There are about 500 government health facilities in the state were running without doctors and pharmacists were treating the patients. Now, for the last eight months Ayush doctors have been posted in these facilities, who are diagnosing patients and prescribing allopathic medicines.

This was informed at a press conference by Amber Chouhan, President, Prantiya Pharmacist Association on Thursday.

The Ayush doctors are not eligible to prescribe allopathic medicines as their specialisation is entirely different.

The diagnosis done by the Ayush doctors might be right but they cannot prescribe allopathic medicines. “At a primary health check up camp in Dhar, an 80-year-old lady with high sugar was prescribed a medicine twice a day which should be taken once in week. She could have died if the pharmacist had not refused to give the medicine,” said Chouhan.

The association demands that Ayush doctors should not be given the responsibility to give allopathic treatment, which they have been doing since last 8 months. The pharmacists study same subjects and get same training as an MBBS. After MBBS doctors, pharmacists should be given the privilege to treat the patients and prescribe allopathic medicines.

Ayush practitioners may lose their registration

Directorate of Ayush, New Delhi has issued orders that if any doctor Unani, Ayurvedic and Homeopathic stream is found to prescribe allopathic medicine then disciplinary action will be taken against them and their registration for practicing Unani, Ayurveda and Homeopathy will be cancelled with immediate effect. In Madhya Pradesh, Ayush Doctors have been appointed at PHC’s for prescribing allopathic medicines. Presently, more than 700 Ayush doctors are practicing allopathic treatment at different PHC’s and at private clinics as well.
