Indian auto giant, Tata Motors, will be launching the Tiago hatchback today. The Tiago has had a troubled run in the industry, even before it officially went on sale. The hatch bore the ‘Zica’ nameplate earlier, which landed it in a soup for sounding too similar to the ‘Zika’ virus. The official launch was originally slated for January 20, 2016 and was later postponed to March. The Tiago can be booked across Tata dealerships for a token amount of Rs. 10,000.
Tata Tiago
The first car to be based on Tata’s gen-next ‘Impact’ design philosophy, the hatch sits between the Bolt and the Nano in Tata’s line-up. It features two entirely new engines developed specifically for the hatch and it’s to be sedan sibling, the Kite5. The ‘Revotorq’ diesel engine is a 1.05 litre, three-cylinder engine that churns out 69bhp of power and 140Nm of peak torque. The ‘Revotron’ petrol motor on the other hand delivers 84 bhp and 115Nm. Both engines are mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. An AMT variant is on the cards. The top-spec XZ version of the Tiago, will get goodies such as an eight speaker Harman sound system, 14” alloy wheels, foglamps, rear wiper and demister as well.
Competition for the Tiago includes the Chevrolet Beat, the Maruti Celerio and the Hyundai Grand i10.
