After overcoming several hurdles, including a name change, Tata Motors has finally launched the Tata Tiago at a starting price of INR 3.20 lakhs (half a lakh cheaper than expected). Even with its affordable starting price for the petrol variant, is it worth your money? Let’s find out.
Engine
The Tata Tiago comes with two engine options. Both of these mills are 3-cylinder units and are city performers. Other cars in this segment which offer dual options are the Maruti Celerio and the Chevrolet Beat.
Maruti offers a 1.0-litre petrol and 0.8-litre diesel engine in the Celerio and they produce 67bhp and 47bhp of power, respectively, while the Beat offers a choice between a 1.2-litre petrol and a 1.0-litre diesel engine, producing 77bhp and 56bhp of power.
The Tata Tiago outperforms both these cars. It feels zippy in city traffic and is comfortable on the highways as well. The 3-cylinder engines have a tendency to vibrate more than the 4-cylinder units, but Tata has managed to tone down the noise, vibrations and harshness (NVH) levels. So, if you want a car that performs well and has good driving dynamics, the Tiago is a good choice.
Dimensions
In the size department, the Tata Tiago is the longest and the widest among its peers. However, the Celerio is the tallest, with the Tiago ranking second. Thus, the Tiago offers maximum leg and shoulder room, while the Celerio will be slightly more comfortable for taller passengers. Overall space is the largest in Tiago with the biggest boot. So, in terms of space, the Tata tiago leads the pack!
Features
Tata has been generous in loading the car with features and gizmos, such as ConnectNext Infotainment System, Turn-by-Turn Navigation App and the Juke-Car App.
The ConnectNext Infotainment System is also employed in the Zest, the Bolt and the Safari Storme. Developed by Harman, it offers Bluetooth, USB and Aux connectivity. The display also doubles up as a parking aid, projecting the data from the rear parking sensors. It sends the output to an eight-speaker system (four speakers, four tweeters) – the first and the best in the segment.
Turn-by-Turn Navigation App features offline maps – synchronized to your smartphone via Bluetooth and used on the phone – by MapMyIndia. The Juke-Car App lets you connect up to ten devices to a master phone (via Wi-Fi hotspot), allowing users to pool together a playlist for songs. The playlist keeps playing even after the users are disconnected, and till the master phone remains connected.
No other car in the segment offers such features and so the Tiago is one of the best feature loaded car in its segment.
Although the data looks tempting, here are some points which could change your mind about buying the Tiago.
1. No automatic transmission on offer
The Tiago only comes with a 5-speed manual transmission option, whereas the Celerio has an option for an automated manual transmission (AMT) coupled to the petrol variant. So, if you are looking for an easy and hassle-free city drive, the Celerio AMT is the best option.
2. Engine refinement
The engines on the Tiago are three-cylinder units which have a tendency to vibrate more than the two- and four-cylinder units. So, the Tiago might lag in front of Maruti and Chevrolet when it comes to engine refinement and power delivery.
