Electric cars are no longer a thing of fantasy with the segment gaining popularity in global markets. In India though, electric vehicles (EV) account for a negligible share of car sales. However, Mahindra has been at the forefront of e-wheelers in India and after years of going solo, the e2o will finally be joined by another electric car, the e-Verito, and the Indian carmaker is launching the sedan today.

Mahindra showcased the e-Verito at the Delhi Auto Expo earlier this year after presenting the concept version at the 2014 expo. As the name suggests, the car is based on Mahindra’s slow selling Verito sedan that is otherwise offered with a 1.5-litre diesel engine. Like the e2o, the e-Verito runs on electricity alone. It is powered by a 3-phase 72V electric motor that produces 41PS of power and 91Nm of torque. Charging the car’s battery from 0 to 100 per cent takes around seven to eight hours or one and a half hour with the fast charge option. The model has a claimed range of 100km (e2o = 120km), so it will be offered as a city commuter.

The car will be offered in three variants – D2, D4 and D6, and only the top-end variant will be offered with the fast charging option. The e-Verito is unlikely to be a great seller, but the fact that it is a four door sedan will enhance its appeal, given the added practicality it offers over the e2o hatchback.
