Ulhasnagar:<\/strong> In a significant political development in Ulhasnagar, Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) corporator Vicky Darshan Singh Labana, elected from Ward 6-A in the Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation elections, has been disqualified from his post after his caste certificate was declared invalid by the District Caste Certificate Verification Committee in Nashik.<\/p>

Contested From OBC-Reserved Seat<\/strong><\/p>

The disqualification order was issued by Municipal Commissioner Manisha Awhale under the provisions of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act following the scrutiny of Labana\u2019s caste validity documents submitted for verification after his election from an Other Backward Classes (OBC)-reserved seat.<\/p>

According to official records, Labana had contested and won the civic election from the OBC-reserved constituency by submitting a caste certificate identifying him as belonging to the \u2018Banjara\u2019 community. The certificate, numbered 4152120741963 and issued on December 17, 2015, was later examined by the Nashik District Caste Certificate Verification Committee.<\/p>

Order Dated May 13, 2026<\/strong><\/p>

In its order dated May 13, 2026, the committee ruled the certificate invalid and directed that the document be surrendered to the government authorities. The decision was communicated to the civic administration, prompting further action from the Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation.<\/p>

Acting on the committee\u2019s findings and in accordance with the directives of the State Election Commission, Commissioner Manisha Awhale issued an official order on May 22 declaring Labana disqualified as a municipal corporator with retrospective effect from May 23, 2026.<\/p>

Mumbai, May 23: <\/strong>In a major boost to cancer healthcare services, the Maharashtra government has announced the launch of 27 new day-care cancer treatment units across the state. The initiative aims to make cancer treatment more accessible to patients in their own districts and reduce the burden on hospitals in major cities.<\/p>

Maharashtra Public Health Minister Prakash Abitkar made the announcement during a high-level meeting held at the Health Services Commissionerate in Mumbai. The meeting was attended by cancer specialists, representatives of private hospitals, and social organisations.<\/p>

Cancer treatment network to expand<\/strong><\/p>

According to the minister, Maharashtra currently operates nine cancer day-care centres that provide chemotherapy and other essential treatments. <\/p>

The addition of 27 new units will significantly strengthen the healthcare network and help patients avoid long-distance travel for repeated treatment sessions.<\/p>

Abitkar emphasised that the number of cancer patients in the state has been steadily increasing, making the expansion of treatment facilities an urgent need. He added that local treatment access would reduce both financial and mental stress for patients and their families.<\/p>

Focus on early detection and vaccination<\/strong><\/p>

The state government is also focusing on early cancer detection. Screening campaigns using cancer diagnostic vans are being conducted across eight divisions of Maharashtra, and more than three crore citizens have already been screened.<\/p>

To prevent cervical cancer, the government has launched an HPV vaccination campaign for girls aged 14 to 15 years.<\/p>

Mumbai, May 23: <\/strong>A private animal welfare non-governmental organisation (NGO) in Kalyan has been booked for the alleged brutal killing of five stray dogs and the subsequent illegal dumping of their carcasses in a local nullah. The case of animal cruelty and environmental hazard has sent a wave of shock through the animal welfare community across the city.<\/p>

According to the first information report filed by the Bazarpeth Police in Thane City, at least five stray dog carcasses were recovered from a sewage drain flowing near the APMC Market's Diamond Building on the night of May 13. <\/p>

According to the complainant, the dogs were sheltered by Janice Smith Animal Welfare Trust \u2014 located opposite Sarvoday Mall, Patripol \u2014 to be vaccinated and sterilised, but allegedly died due to ill-keeping.<\/p>

Carcasses allegedly dumped in nullah<\/strong><\/p>

The complainant stated that instead of properly burying or incinerating the dogs, the trust allegedly stuffed the carcasses into plastic bags and discarded them into the nullah. <\/p>

Mumbai, May 23: <\/strong>Coming down heavily on the suspended directors of a corporate debtor for allegedly obstructing the insolvency resolution process, the Bombay High Court has directed authorities to hand over possession of the entire property situated at 37, Juhu Beach, Mumbai, to the successful resolution applicant (SRA) with police protection.<\/p>

A bench of Justices Manish Pitale and Shreeram Shirsat also authorised the police to use \u201creasonable, appropriate and necessary force\u201d to ensure compliance with its orders and warned that anyone obstructing the process would be dealt with appropriately.<\/p>

Court directs police assistance<\/strong><\/p>

The case arose from a plea filed by interim manager and erstwhile resolution professional Pravin Navandar, seeking assistance in taking physical possession of the assets of the corporate debtor in terms of orders passed by the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT).<\/p>

Earlier, on April 28, the HC had directed the Juhu Police Station to provide police assistance for handing over possession. However, the petitioner informed the court that the order could only be partly implemented because of obstruction allegedly caused by the suspended directors and their security personnel.<\/p>

During the hearing, one of the suspended directors argued that only certain CTS numbers mentioned in the information memorandum formed part of the corporate debtor\u2019s assets and that other adjoining plots could not be taken over.<\/p>

HC rejects directors\u2019 contention<\/strong><\/p>

Rejecting the contention, the bench observed that the directors were taking \u201ca diametrically opposite stand\u201d compared to earlier proceedings before the NCLAT and the Supreme Court, where they had themselves claimed that the disputed CTS No. 561 formed part of the corporate debtor\u2019s property.<\/p>

\u201cWe find that the aforesaid approach of the applicant and the other suspended directors of the corporate debtor was taken note of by the NCLT,\u201d the court said, referring to earlier findings on their lack of cooperation during the Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process (CIRP).<\/p>

The HC further remarked that the directors had \u201ccontinued with their obstructionist activities\u201d and were attempting to \u201cfrustrate the orders passed by the NCLT and this Court\u201d.<\/p>

The bench noted that the conduct of the suspended directors defeated \u201cthe very object\u201d of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC). It also relied on an earlier NCLT observation that the directors were \u201cmore concerned with loss of control of the Corporate Debtor\u201d than supporting the resolution process.<\/p>

The court directed the Juhu Police to deploy adequate personnel, including lady constables, during the possession exercise and warned that anyone obstructing the process would be dealt with appropriately.<\/p>

Mumbai, May 23: <\/strong>India\u2019s central drug regulator has flagged 169 drug samples as \u201cNot of Standard Quality\u201d (NSQ) during its routine quality checks conducted in April, while one medicine sample has been identified as potentially spurious.<\/p>

According to the findings, 42 of the NSQ samples were detected by central laboratories (CDSCO), while state drug testing laboratories identified the remaining 127 samples. <\/p>

The list includes widely used medicines such as paracetamol, metformin, sitagliptin combination drugs used for diabetes treatment, amoxicillin-based antibiotics, and several cough syrups.<\/p>

Potentially spurious medicine under investigation<\/strong><\/p>

A sample of Ursodeoxycholic Acid, a medicine commonly prescribed for gallbladder stones and liver-related cholestatic disorders, has been marked as spurious. <\/p>

The batch in question was reportedly collected from Bihar and manufactured in August 2024. The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) stated that the company named on the label has denied manufacturing the batch.<\/p>

Officials said the matter is currently under investigation, and the product will continue to be treated as potentially spurious until the probe is completed.<\/p>

Under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, a drug is considered spurious if it is manufactured under the name of another product or imitates another medicine in a misleading manner that could deceive consumers.<\/p>

Routine surveillance exercise continues<\/strong><\/p>

The Union Health Ministry clarified that the issue is limited to the specific batches tested by government laboratories and does not indicate any wider concern regarding other medicines currently available in the market.<\/p>

Authorities said the identification of NSQ and spurious drugs is part of a regular nationwide surveillance exercise carried out jointly with state regulators to ensure such products are removed from circulation.<\/p>
