Preeti Rathi case: Welcome verdict on acid attack

An eye for an eye is not something that everybody believes in. And yes, everyone is entitled to his or her own belief provided it is not a case of a cold blooded and most painful method of killing someone purely because of jealousy. The cold blooded killing of Preeti Rathi of Delhi by Ankur Panwar, also of Delhi, who had hurled acid on her in Mumbai, did not deserve anything less than a death sentence. Whether this proves as a deterrent or not is a debatable point but parents and others close to Preeti needed the right closure after having gone through the trauma of her brutal murder.

Our existing laws and failure to implement them leads to far too many incidents of acid attacks on women and that too for petty reasons many a times. Panwar killed Preeti, his neighbour, with acid only because he envied her career growth and could not stand his parents criticising him for his failure to get a job.

There are hundreds of incidents where women have been attacked only because they have rebuffed the advances made by men and/or youth. Governments do resort to rhetoric post acid attacks but seldom manage to curb, let alone stop, the horrific attacks on women and girls.
