Mumbai: The roads in Jawahar Nagar area of Goregaon west are damaged and have not been repaired despite being constructed just five to six months ago. Dilip Patel, Corporator of that area, has accused the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation of not maintaining the roads despite passing repeated proposals in the past Standing Committee meetings.

The road no. 5, 8, 9 and 10 of Jawahar Nagar are damaged with potholes and uneven surfaces. These roads are used by a number of commuters as Jawahar Nagar connects the road leading to the Goregaon railway station to the SV Road.

Dolly Savla, a resident of Jawahar Nagar, said, “We travel on these roads everyday in order to reach Goregaon station and these potholes lead to traffic and damage to our vehicles especially during monsoons.” Another shopkeeper said, “The BMC workers often come, dig up few areas and fill some potholes. But again after few days, the roads are back to their normal damaged state.”

The road no. 1 which leads to the major market area has been recently repaired as the joints on the road were filled but now the road has been proposed to be dug again as water drainage pipes are to be fitted. The road no. 9 has been included in the pothole category though the road does not have any potholes.

Patel told the Free Press Journal, “These tar roads easily wear out in just few months from construction due to either engineering faults or non maintenance. As per the policy, the contractor is responsible for maintaining the roads for three years from its construction.”

In the last standing committee meeting, Patel raised this issue claiming that the civic body was passing a number of proposals for road repairs but there was no work implemented at the ground level. Sanjay Darade, chief engineer of roads, responded to Patel saying, “These roads should be repaired before this monsoon as these are chronic spots where potholes reappear every time.”

These roads have been constructed six months back and have not been repaired since. Patel also claimed by classifying few good roads in the pothole category, BMC will have to float the tenders again and this will lead to wastage of funds because such roads do not require any repair.
