Rajasthan Governor Kalyan Singh ought to have known the apolitical nature of his largely ceremonial office. By speaking out of turn, and wishing that as an old BJP member he would like to see Modi return to power, he did violate the Model Code of Conduct.
It is good of the EC that it has found him in violation of the code and written to the President, Ram Nath Kovind to discipline Singh. Such a disciplinary measure, most likely, would result in Kovind forwarding the letter from the EC to Singh along with a polite note drawing his attention to the lapse.
Hopefully, Singh and other constitutional authorities would learn from the Rajasthan Governor’s lapse and remain completely neutral in the on-going electoral contest. Meanwhile, all parties concerned should cease exploiting the Kalyan Singh episode to score brownie points against him or his former party.
