Meet Christine Sinclair: Canada Star Who Is Agonizingly Close To Breaking Cristiano Ronaldo's Record

Christine Sinclair is Canada's captain and their greatest footballer of all time.

The 40-year-old has played in North America her whole career and made her debut for Canada aged 18 at Algarve Cup 2000. She finished as the tournament's leading goal scorer.

Sinclair has recorded 190 goals in 322 appearances for Canada. Sinclair scored her 184th and 185th international goals against St Kitts and Nevis in the CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualifying Championship.

She posted on Twitter afterwards, "Thank you to everyone for all the messages. I'm slightly overwhelmed. Thank you to all my teammates, coaches, staff, friends and family, 185 would not have been possible without you."

The 322 appearances is also a record among both male and female footballers. The veteran has participated in four World Cups as captain and scored at least five different tournaments.

Sinclair is also part of Canada's Hall of Fame, inducted in 2013 and was appointed as the Officer of the Order of Canada in 2017.

In 2012, Sinclair received the Lou Marsh Trophy for Canada's Athlete of the Year and Bobbie Rosenfeld award for the female athlete of the year.

In the 2023 World Cup match against Nigeria, Sinclair missed a penalty chance. A goal would have meant she would have broken Cristiano Ronaldo's record of scoring in five different competitions by scoring her sixth. However, she will get more opportunities to break it.
