The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) headquarters, located in South Mumbai, is a heritage structure. It stands opposite the iconic Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus station.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was established in 1865, and Arthur Crawford served as its first municipal commissioner for five years.

Before constructing the building, two designs were considered: one in the Gothic style by Frederick William Stevens and the other in the Indo-Saracenic style presented by Robert Fellowes Chisholm.

The staircase inside the BMC Headquarters is flanked by majestic winged lions, enhancing the building's regal and imposing aesthetic.

The BMC Headquarters features original stained glass, some of which has been carefully restored, adding to the intricate beauty of the structure.

Designed by architect F.W. Stevens, who studied council halls across Europe, the BMC Headquarters was crafted with European architectural influences in mind, lending it a distinctive grandeur.

The municipality was originally located in a modest building at the end of Girgaum Road. In 1870, it moved to a new building on the Esplanade, situated between the Watson Hotel and the Sassoon Mechanics Institute, where the current Army & Navy building now stands.
