Eye on Maharashtra polls, civic body agrees to provide water to city slums
Mumbai: Keeping an eye on the forthcoming civic polls, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in general body meeting held on Monday passed a proposal to provide water supply connection to the slum dwellers in next two months.
In fact after the delimitation of the Wards which has led to the shuffling of thousands of electorates in the city, this proposal can be seen as a crucial decision to lure voters. This is because most of the party leaders were unhappy as they had to leave their wards.
On November 28, ‘Pani Pilao Abhiyaan’ was carried outside the BMC headquarter by the slum dwellers for getting a connection for clean and safe water supply for their daily needs.
“We welcome the decision taken of providing water supply connection for the slum dwellers across the city. The people living in the slum do not have proper water connection and water which they are getting is not clean and safe,” said Sitaram Shelar, convenor, Pani Haq Samiti (PHS).
Rais Shaikh, Samajwadi Party said, “I am supporting the decision taken by the civic body for providing water supply connection to the slum dwellers across the city.”
On the other hand Shaikh added, “The slum across the city is divided in two parts (legal and illegal) and the conditions for both is different. The condition made by the civic body for the slum dwellers of getting water supply connection is impractical and irrespective.”
Trushna Vishwasrao, leader of ruling party said, “The slum dwellers across the city will get the water connection on the various terms and condition made by the civic body. However, the water supply connection will be provided on the basis of residential proof submitted to the BMC officials.”
