Non-cooperative boss

I have a very rude boss. He does not easily grant leaves. Last month when I couldn’t make it to office due to my illness, he said that since I had used up my leaves for the year, I would be suspended if I missed another day. I accepted, not knowing what was to come. My relative fell sick and I have been staying at the hospital the past few nights. Thus, I haven’t gone for work. I haven’t received any calls from there so I think they have replaced me. How do I talk to my boss and convince him to take me back? I need this job.

Ans: You can probably start with sending an email or placing a call at the workplace to know the status of your job. If it’s based on mere speculations regarding your boss’s previous behaviour then a clarification is much needed. You can only request for your job to be retained if they have officially taken a decision to let go of you. Talk to the HR department as well in order to clarify the reason for your absence from work and if required also speak to them about the terms and conditions of your contract with them.

Partiality at the best

I am facing a problem in my workplace. The head of my department is very lenient to some of the colleagues and does not give promotions according to merit. She is very partial to one of my colleagues who is her niece. I have a better resume than hers and higher qualifications. I am more productive during office hours. I deserved it, yet she got to be the assistant head for this financial year. I need a solution to get away from this partiality and gain my deserved position.

Ans: If you strongly feel against the partiality factor, then rather than making it an accusation towards your boss, you can probably take it up to her in a way to get a clarity on future prospects for you. Together, you both can discuss your expectations towards the organisation as an employee and get to know her expectations as an employer. This might help in getting a better picture for you in terms of receiving the due credit. You will not feel being wronged if steps are taken towards the career advancement and not to highlight the partiality.

Chasing that dream job

I am a 26-year-old writer. I am currently writing in the publishing field but I am interested in travel journalism. I do not get leaves from work and thus no time to travel. I cannot afford to leave this job as it is my only means of earning through which I can take holidays. I know I must follow my dreams but does anyone know how? I have been unsuccessful in securing another job as there is full employment in my area as the education level is high here. Is there an alternative for me that anyone may know about?

Ans: You can maybe begin by searching for jobs outside your city if everything around you seem difficult to get in. One, this shift in job in another city can at least start up with your idea of getting into travel journalism and gradually you can pick up with your dream job. You can also connect with other travel journalists online to know about their experiences and what they would suggest for you get a break into the profession. Maybe understanding the profession from people who work closely in the field can help clear up few important aspects for you.

Problematic work phobia

I have studied medicine. I have always dreamt of becoming a surgeon and have been quite assertive in my decision. Now that I have graduated, I am doing an internship at a local private hospital. I have realised that I am squeamish to blood and other things that one may have to see during a surgery. I do not know what to do as if I leave this field my years of studying so hard will go waste. Is there a way to get rid of this phobia or any other solution?

Ans: You can start counselling or behavioural therapy for your phobia as it’s going on to be a definite hindrance in your progress. The only change that has happened is that working in a clinic is a reality while studying was more on the simulated basis. Thus, if you keep your training in mind and work accordingly as if it’s an application of your learning, things definitely might work in your favour.
