Cairo: Egyptian army killed 74 militants in restive North Sinai region of the country on the 13th day of a major operation against them.

The security forces also arrested 52 suspected terrorists, army spokesperson Brig Gen Mohamed Samir said. Samir said that 76 shelters and headquarters belonging to militants and their 42 unlicensed vehicles and motorcycles were destroyed during the campaign. The army recently started a major campaign in the cities of Rafah, Sheikh Zwayed and Al-Arish against militants. Egypt’s North Sinai has witnessed many violent attacks by militants since the January, 2011 revolution that toppled the longtime president Hosni Mubarak. The attacks targeting police and military increased after the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in 2013 by military following massive protests against his rule. Over 600 security personnel have been reported killed since then.
