The Characteristics of Important Liquids and their Adjuvants (Anupand)

  •    Coconut oil

It is an edible oil used instead of ghee in Southern India.

Properties

It is heavy and cool in its attributes. It alleviates Vata-Pitta and aggravates Kapha.


Advantages

It is beneficial for the hair. It is the best natural nutrition for hair, being the best hair

oil. It is a very good massage oil for dry skin. It delays wrinkles and skin sagging. Its

soothing quality helps in removing stress through gentle massage and gives a cooling

effect in summer when massaged on the head.

Indications

It helps in treating various skin problems including psoriasis, dermatitis, eczema and

other skin infections. It helps in controlling diabetes and in dissolving kidney stones.

  •    Linseed (flax) oil

It is a colourless to yellowish oil which is dry in nature.

Properties

This oil is sweet-sour, hot in its attribute and pungent in vipaka. It vitiates Kapha, Pitta

and blood, mitigates Vata and causes skin problems.

Indications

It reduces joint inflammation, arthritis, gout and back pain, prevents heart diseases,

lowers cholesterol and controls hypertension. It is effective in constipation, hemorrhoids

(piles) and gallstones.

Honey

Honey is a sweet viscous fluid produced by bees and other insects from the nectar of flowers. There are different types of honey. Though it is typically brown, it can range in color from yellow-tinged to red or even black. In Ayurveda honey is considered to positively affect all three primitive material imbalances of the body: Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Some learned practitioners like Susruta believed that honey had a calming effect on all three dosas.

Properties

The properties of honey are enumerated below:

  •     Sweetness with an astringent after-taste. It is cool, dry and heavy.
  •     Anti-bacterial properties contribute in treating variety of ailments.
  •     Anti-oxidant properties strengthen the immune system.
  •     Being hygroscopic, it absorbs moisture, hydrates the skin and restores damaged skin making it soft, supple and young.
  •     It is an expulsive substance, reduces cough (lekhanam), it helps to expel viscous mucous and catarrh effectively (chedanam). It is a soothing agent, very useful in sore throat and cough (slesmahara).
  •     It acts as a uniting agent (sandhaniya), bringing together the ends of deep wounds or injured parts and cleanses and heals the wounds (shodhanam-ropanam).
  •     Calms tridosa (Vata-Pitta-Kaphaghnam).
  •     Natural detoxifying agent (visa prasamana).
  •     It is an instant energizer (bala pradhanam).
  •     Improves the appetite and digestive fire (agnidipanam).
  •     Improves the complexion (varnyam).
  •     Good for eyes and eyesight (caksusyam).
  •     Good for the heart (hrdya).
  •     Quenches thirst (trt) and stop hiccoughs (hidhma).

Newly collected honey is nourishing, increases the body weight, promotes strength and being a mild laxative, relieves constipation. It reduces cough when taken in a small amount. “Old” honey is highly stimulating and scarifying, relieves constipation, helps in the metabolism of fat thus reducing fat and cholesterol, and is good for digestion.

Ayurveda explains another special quality of honey which is ‘Yogavahi’ which means it is an excellent transporter. The substance which has the quality of penetrating the deepest tissue is called ‘Yogavahi’. When honey is used with other herbal preparations, it acquires and enhances the medicinal qualities of those herbs and also helps them to reach the deeper tissues. Thus honey acts as an excellent transporter and is used frequently with Ayurvedic medicines as an adjuvant (vehicle).

 

Indications

Honey is very beneficial for diseases such as internal bleeding, urinary disorders, prameha (urinary abnormalities), dermatitis, bronchial asthma and other pulmonary or respiratory problems, cough, diarrhea, vomiting, toxicity and worm infestation.

 Important Facts

  • Honey and heat are considered opposing forces.
  • Intake of warm honey is not recommended. Hence it should not be taken substances, during summer and in ailments caused due to heat.
  • The only condition where warm honey can be used is while administering.
  • through vomiting, as the warm honey is eliminated from the body along with the vomit hence it does not develop any toxic effect.

Taking honey and ghee in equal quantities is not recommenced but consuming the same in small amounts and in different proportions, it becomes nectar.
