Jawaharlal Nehru doesn’t need any introduction. He is well known as an influential leader in the Indian independence movement and  was the political heir of Mahatma Gandhi. He became the first prime minister of Independent India in 1947 and held the Prime Ministerial office for three times. He is known as a visionary who laid the foundation of free India. He successfully established various economic, social and educational reforms that are even today admired by millions of India. But his personal and political life was marked with several controversies. From being born in a brothel in Allahabad to getting a Catholic nun pregnant, there are many controversies that revolves around the life of the first Prime Minister of India. Here are three bizarre theories and facts related to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.

Muslim ancestors
Theory:
In 2015, changes were made in the Wikipedia pages of Jawaharlal Nehru claiming Nehru’s grandfather Gangadhar Nehru was born as a Muslim whose real name was Ghiasuddin Ghazi. He was a kotwal of the Mughals, but changed his name to escape the British clutches. Congress claimed that the editing in the page was done through a Government of India Internet Protocol (IP) address. However, the edits were later deleted by volunteer editors.
Fact: Historic accounts suggest that Nehru’s family was Kashmiri Pandits and his ancestor Raj Kaul was a Sanskrit and Persian scholar. In fact, Kaul’s house was near a canal, Nahar in Arabic, and that’s the origin of the  surname ‘Nehru’.

Nehru died of AIDS
Theory:
This is another conspiracy theory that states Nehru was a womaniser and died because of Sexually Transmitted Disease AIDS. While according to historic facts, on May 27, 1964, after returning from a holiday at Dehradun, he suffered a sudden heart attack. He breathed his last later that afternoon.
Fact: The first known case of HIV-AIDS was diagnosed in 1986, two decades after Nehru’s death. The first case in India was diagnosed by Dr Suniti Solomon and her student Dr Sellapan Nirmala in 1986, amongst the female sex workers in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.  Later that year, many cases of women suffering the deadly disease were detected.

Amitabh Bachchan is Nehru’s son
Theory:
‘Amitabh Bachchan is Nehru’s son’ is another bizarre theory surrounding Nehru. According to theory, Teji Bachchan, Amitabh’s mother, was introduced to Nehru by his daughter Indira Gandhi. Nehru got intimate with Teji and after she got pregnant, he asked Harivashrai to marry her. Since Harivansh’s wife passed away in 1941 he was looking for a soul mate. Harivansh and Nehru were childhood friends and are from Allahabad.
Fact: The only common factor between both the families is that they belong to Allahabad. The relation between the two families began when Harivansh Rai Bachchan started working in India’s foreign ministry as a Hindi Officer. Later, when the Bachchan family moved to Delhi, Teji got fame as a social activist and the friendship between Indira and Teji became deeper. The relationship continued in the next generations with Amitabh and Rajiv as good friends.
